Colosseum Interior

This is a view of the interior of the Colosseum. The circular area is actually the “underground” portion of the amphitheater where the animals involved in the gladiator games were kept. What was above this (but has now decayed away) was a wooden floor covered with sand. The Latin word for sand is “arena” which is where we get the modern word “arena”. Why sand? Apparently it was very good at soaking up the blood.
