Colosseum Interior
This is a view of the interior of the Colosseum. The circular area is actually the underground portion of the amphitheater where the animals involved in the gladiator games were kept. What was above this (but has now decayed away) was a wooden floor covered with sand. The Latin word for sand is arena which is where we get the modern word arena. Why sand? Apparently it was very good at soaking up the blood.
