Bocca Della Verita
The Bocca Della Verita, or “Mouth of Truth”, is located outside the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Legend states that the Mouth will chomp down on the hands of liars. Hordes of tourists disprove this every day by sticking their hand in while someone takes there picture. The legend, even if not true, is perhaps more interesting than reality - the Bocca Della Verita, with all of its magical powers, is actually an ancient drain cover. I wasn’t feeling very honest that day which is why you don’t see my hand in the mouth.
